Metal Roofing
When it comes to getting a new roof, homeowners have the opportunity to choose from a variety of materials. Metal roofing has gained popularity among homeowners due to several reasons, including the ease of installation. Unlike the manual attachment of individual shingles required for asphalt roofs, metal roofing comes in large sheets, making the installation process faster and more organized. The preparation needed for installing metal roofing is relatively simple, making it a suitable choice for projects with tight deadlines. Along with the ease of installation, there are numerous other benefits associated with metal roofing. Advantages of Metal RoofingExtended Lifespan: One of the primary advantages that often convinces homeowners to choose metal roofing is its exceptional longevity. Many types of metal roof coverings are rated to last up to 50 years, and with proper care and maintenance, they can even surpass that lifespan. In fact, some manufacturers claim that metal roofs can outlast asphalt roofs by twice the duration. Additionally, metal roofing is cost-effective compared to asphalt roofing, making it an excellent choice for those in need of a new roof. Superior Quality: Metal roofing offers several advantages over other types of materials. Firstly, it is more affordable due to streamlined manufacturing processes, making it a budget-friendly option. Secondly, metal roofs are known for their durability, making them ideal for residential purposes. They can withstand harsh weather conditions and remain intact for an extended period. Generally, a metal roof can last up to 50 years, ensuring a long-lasting investment. For proper installation, it is recommended to consult professionals like Greg Lilly Roofing & Restoration. Wear Resistance: The durability of metal roofs is a major factor that homeowners appreciate. Metal roofing is resistant to wear and tear, making it an excellent choice for residential purposes. Moreover, it has a long lifespan, ensuring that your investment is protected and will endure for many years. By choosing a metal roof, you can have peace of mind knowing that your home is well-protected. Environmental Benefits: Contrary to popular belief, metal roofing is environmentally friendly. Opting for a long-lasting roofing material reduces the need for frequent replacements, resulting in less waste. When you consider that you may only need to replace your roof twice in your lifetime, it becomes evident that metal roofing contributes positively to the environment. Proper maintenance throughout its lifespan further enhances its eco-friendliness. Lightweight and Easy Installation: Metal roofing is lightweight, which simplifies the installation process. However, this does not compromise its durability. Its weight allows for installation directly over an existing roof, eliminating the need to remove and dispose of the old roofing material. This feature makes metal roofing an ideal choice for homeowners who want to avoid the additional expenses associated with tearing down the existing roof. Roofing Inspection Tips
If you want to avoid costly roof repairs, you should consider having your roof inspected during spring or summer. It is best to have a roofing inspection done during these two seasons since the weather is conducive to outdoor work. What you should do is hire a roofing contractor to do the inspection. It only costs a few hundred dollars. However, you also have the option of doing it yourself. Although DIY roof inspections are not recommended, it is possible to do your own inspection. Here are areas that you need to focus on during a roofing inspection:Piles of leaves, algae, and mossDon’t expect to see a pristine-looking roof when you finally decide to do your own roofing inspection in Myrtle Beach, SC. In most cases, roofs will have some amount of dirt trapped in the gutters and other areas. If you see any pile of leaves, clear them away. When you see moss and algae growing on your roof, have a roofer clean them up. Don’t attempt to use your own pressure washer. You might end up blasting the shingles off of your roof than cleaning them. Although you can do the cleaning the old-fashioned way, it will take too might time and effort, especially on a hot sunny day. Issues with shinglesIt’s no surprise to see some shingle problems on your roof. Some of the shingles might be buckled, cracked, or even missing. Unfortunately, you can’t easily proceed with the repairs unless you have a certain degree of experience, knowledge, and tools needed to replace roof shingles. If you find that there are areas of your roof where the shingles have gone bad or are missing, call your local roofing contractor immediately. Don’t let the problem go on without having them repaired. Cracked or missing shingles could make way for leaks. Roof leaks, on the other hand, are entirely different problems. It is best to fix any issue you may find before it is too late. Do a close-up inspectionWhen you do your own roof inspection, be sure that you do a close-up inspection. Don’t just skim the roof, there are plenty of areas that you need to check. Of course, if you don’t know what you are looking for, you can always call Greg Lilly Roofing & Restoration to come and do the inspection. Check your atticWhat most people who do their own roof inspection don’t often realize is that they need to check the attic. If you have a lot of stuff in your attic, it might be hard to move around and find potential problem areas. However, inspecting the attic is a major part of the roof inspection. It is important to not skip the attic since leaks and other issues can be found there. Again, if you want a thorough inspection, you could always hire roofing contractors. Roof Inspection Checklist
We recommend roof inspection at least once per year. An annual or bi-annual inspection will help you identify potential problems and fix them before they turn into serious issues that can cost you a lot of money. You can easily spot underlying problems as a homeowner by simply walking around your home and looking at the roof or other signs of damage. How can you check your roof from the ground? What can a roofer see by climbing up to the roof? A Roof Inspection Checklist for HomeownersCheck out this list to see what you can find on your roof, whether from the inside or outside: 1. Water DamageYou may notice dark circles or spots on your ceiling or walls. This is a sign that your roof has a leak, which allows water to seep through the walls. 2. MoldMold growth can be detected by small clusters that are black, dark green, brown, gray, or white. The cause is excessive moisture in the home, most likely from the decking underneath the roof. 3. The Rafters are SaggingIf your ceiling is sagging, or if you can see light through the rafters of your home, either there is a hole in the roof or moisture has caused it to sag. These are both serious issues that require immediate roof repair. What you might not be able to seeGreg Lilly Roofing & Restoration has a list that we use for evaluating your roof, from the top to the bottom and inside to outside. Never climb your roof on your own to check for damage. Here are some of the most common roof damage signs that a professional roofer may find: 1. Cracking and Blistering ShinglesThe accumulation of water behind the roof layers is a common cause of cracks and blisters. Cracks and blisters can also be caused by improper attic ventilation, which causes the roof temperature to rise. 2. Loose NailsCheck for loose nails. They are caused by high temperatures and moisture on the roof. These can be dangerous, as they can cause roof components to come off. 3. Granule LossShingles have mineral granules embedded in them that help to protect them from the sun and keep their color. The granules can be knocked off by heavy rainstorms, causing shingles to wear faster than normal. When getting your roof inspected, it is important to check the level of granules lost. 4. Dented FlashingThe metal sheet that is placed beneath the shingles prevents snow and rain from entering roof openings or cracks. Check your roof for any dented or missing metal flashing. Repair it immediately as it could lead to other problems such as rotting of wood and water penetration. You should expect your roof to last as long as possible if you invest a lot of money in it. This is only possible if your roof is inspected regularly to detect any damage and have it repaired immediately. Our Myrtle Beach roof inspection checklist should help you keep an eye on anything strange that may be happening to your roof. Maintenance Tips for Rain Gutters
Rain gutters are a vital part of the roofing system of your home. The rain gutters are designed to divert stormwater and rain from your roof and away from the foundation of your home. Water damage can be caused by cracked, broken, or clogged rain gutters. Excessive amounts of water that drip or cascade over the gutters may damage your foundation or leak into your crawlspace. It’s important to maintain and inspect your gutters on a regular basis in order to avoid any of these issues. Maintenance Tips For The Gutters1. Regularly clean your guttersEvery few months, homeowners should clean their gutters to allow rainwater to flow freely. To clean your gutters effectively, you will need to climb a ladder using a gutter shovel and scoop out the leaves and other debris. After all, the debris has been removed, flush the gutters with a hose and check the water flow. Many companies offer gutter cleaning services if you don’t feel comfortable climbing a ladder. 2. Check Your Downspouts For ClogsYou should also inspect your downspouts to see if they are clogged. If your downspouts become clogged up with dirt, leaves, and other debris, water will not have a place to flow. This can cause water to back up or spill over the sides of the gutters during heavy rain. You can test the flow of water and remove any clogs with a garden hose fitted with a pressure nozzle if you cannot see into your downspouts. 3. Do the necessary maintenance for the guttersVisually inspect your gutters regularly by walking around your house. Are you able to detect any rust or corrosion on your gutters? Are your gutters dropping? Are there any cracks in your gutters? You may be able to seal leaks if you notice small cracks or holes. If you notice extensive damage or your gutters are falling off your house, it may be necessary to hire a gutter repair service to install gutter brackets and replace damaged sections. 4. Install Gutter Guards for Your Gutters to Prevent DebrisGutters guards will reduce the amount of time you need to spend cleaning your gutters. These devices are fitted over or inside gutters to stop leaves, twigs, and other debris from falling into gutters. Once you install gutter guards, all that is left to do is clean the debris and leaves off of the guards. No need to rinse and scoop the gutter. 5. Consider Downspout ExtensionsSplash blocks are often found on downspouts, and they catch the water and direct it a few feet away from your house. If you don’t regularly check and reposition your splash blocks, water can pool around your home or crawlspace. Consider installing a downspout extension instead of the splash block. You can hire a roofing contractor in Myrtle Beach for professional asistance. They are flexible tubes that can be connected to existing downspouts. The tubes should be placed in a way that water will flow away from the foundation of your home. How Often Should You Replace Your Roof?
It is an essential part of your home’s structure. Your roof protects you and your family from the elements. How often should you replace it? When To Replace The RoofRoofs are one of the most essential parts of any home. Their condition can have a significant impact on the quality of life of those who live there. Roofs that are well-maintained can last for many years. However, they will eventually need to be replaced. How often should you replace your roof? This blog post will examine the factors that affect the life expectancy of a roof, and how often the roof should be replaced. Factors Affecting the Lifespan Of a RoofThere are many factors that affect the life expectancy of a roof. The most important factors include: Material: The material of a roof is one of the main factors that will determine its lifespan. Metal roofs can last for up to 50 years, while asphalt shingles may only last 25 years. Climate: The climate in the region where the building is located can affect the lifespan of the roof. If the weather is extreme, such as heavy rain or strong winds, then the roof will wear out more quickly than if it were in a milder climate. Regular roof maintenance can increase the lifespan of your roof. Cleaning gutters, removing any debris, and repairing damages are simple things that can prevent major problems in the future. Installation: The quality and efficiency of a roof installation are also important. The roof may begin to degrade much more quickly if it is not correctly installed. How often should a roof be replaced? The lifespan of a roofing system depends on a number of factors. Here are some guidelines for how often to replace roofs based on common roofing materials. Asphalt Shingle Roof: Asphalt shingle roofs typically last between 15-25 years. It may be time to replace your roof if it is older than 20 years and shows signs of wear. Metal Roof: With proper maintenance, a metal roof can last for up to 50 or more years. If the roof shows signs of rust, or any other damage, then it might need to be replaced sooner. Tile Roofs: A tiled roof is one of the longest-lasting roofing materials. It can last for up to 50 years. It’s vital to maintain the roof and replace any damaged tiles as soon as possible. Flat Roofs: Flat roofs last anywhere between 15 and 20 years. They require maintenance to avoid leaks and other problems. What is the best temperature to replace a roof?It is best to replace your roof between 40 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. In extreme heat, roof shingles may crack and become brittle, while in freezing temperatures, they might not adhere well, leading to gaps or leaks. Roofing contractors in Myrtle Beach work best in mild temperatures because they can install roof shingles without disruption. It is essential to monitor the weather forecast during the replacement process to avoid unexpected rain, which could cause delays or roof damage. If you plan to replace your roof in the near future, choose the season and temperature that will allow for a successful and smooth installation. How long does it take to replace a roof?It can take from one to five days to replace your roof. The time it takes to replace your roof depends on its size and whether you use asphalt shingles, metal, or other roofing materials. It could take 2 days to remove the old roof if you are replacing an entire roof. Then, you’ll need to spend another day or so installing new shingle glue and underlayment before you can install new roof shingles. There may also be additional tasks such as sealing around vents and chimneys that will add time to the project. Cost Estimate for a New RoofThe cost of a roof replacement depends on several factors such as its size, type of material, and labor. The cost of a roof replacement can range from $12,000 to $20,000 if you have to replace it due to damage or leaking. Asphalt shingles are the most popular roofing material due to their durability, affordability, and longevity. A composite asphalt shingle roofing material costs between $7.50 and $13 per square foot. If you choose a more expensive roofing material such as a slate roof, your cost may increase from $9 to $15.00 per square foot. The cost of labor can be increased if old shingles are removed during roof replacement. The cost of a roof replacement depends on several factors, including the type and size of the roof, as well as the asphalt used. Warranty and the Age of Your RoofWarranty coverage varies depending on how old your roof is. Check your warranty when it comes to replacing your roof to determine if the cost of roof replacement in Myrtle Beach is covered. Most warranties cover roofing materials only for a limited time. Some roof manufacturers offer extended warranties if a roof is installed properly by a certified roofing contractor. The age of your roof will also play a part in determining if you need to replace it. If your roof is damaged, for example, with missing shingles or leaking, it may be necessary to replace it, regardless of its age. A roof showing signs of damage, even if it is a relatively new one, may be covered under the warranty. You should have your roof checked periodically to detect any damage. Neglecting roof damage can have serious consequencesNeglecting a roof can have severe consequences. Water leakage is one of the most common problems associated with roof damage. Water leakage can lead to structural damage in a house or building. The water seeps into the walls and ceilings, causing rot and mold. Moisture can also cause electrical problems if it seeps through wiring or outlets. Roof damage that is not addressed can lead to collapse of entire structures in extreme cases. It is important to take care of your roofing system in order for these issues not to occur. Finding a Great Roofing Contractor
Your choice of roofing contractor will have a major impact on your entire roofing project. No matter whether you need a roof repair or a complete roof replacement, it will impact cost, quality, and much more. It’s important to choose a good roofing contractor in Myrtle Beach before investing in your roof. Unfortunately, some roofing contractors are known for taking advantage of homeowners. Every day, we work to restore the industry’s reputation. We’ll give you some tips on how to find a good roofer. Nashville has been a great place to get high-quality roof services. We strive to provide homeowners with all the information they need to make informed decisions about hiring and buying roofing services. We can point you in the direction of the best service provider, even if it’s not us. Choosing A Roofing ContractorYou’ll find out how to choose a good roofing contractor by the end of the article. Don’t forget to get your free checklist with questions you can ask prospective roofing contractors at the end of this article. 1. Look for roofing contractors who have a local phone number and addressIt’s important to choose a local contractor when you’re looking for a contractor to hire. Look for roofers who have an office in your locality and a phone number that is local. You will know exactly where they are if there is ever a problem. Beware of out-of-state companies that come into a town after a storm and undercut the local roofing company’s prices. They then take the money and move to the next storm that hit town. These companies are not concerned with local codes or whether they install your roof properly. A quality local roofing contractor will be familiar with the local installation codes, paperwork, and other requirements to install your roof correctly and in compliance with your state’s regulations. 2. Each roofing contractor is required to be insured, licensed, and bonded. Each roofing contractor must be licensed, bonded, and insured. These three documents are there to protect you, and make sure the job gets done correctly. Make sure that the company you are considering is insured, licensed, and bonded in your state. Ask for proof to ensure they are all three. They’ll be proud to show that they are licensed, bonded, and insured. What does all this paperwork mean for you and your roof, though? LicensedTo get a contractor’s license, they only need to register with the board that regulates contractors in your state. What license they need will depend on the price of the project. A job that costs more than $3,000 will require a license for home improvement, and any project over $25,000 will need a license for general contractors. A general contractor’s licence is required for roofing contractors because roofs are a big investment. BondedIf a contractor fails to complete a project or there is a problem, and the company doesn’t fix it then the customer has recourse against the bond company. A bonding company will know that the roofing contractor is doing business ethically and correctly. The bonding firm posts the bond when they are confident that the contractor will perform the work correctly. InsuredAll contractors must be insured, including general liability insurance, workers’ compensation, and company vehicle coverage for all vehicles, owned or not. The limits of the workman’s compensation and general liability insurance are determined by the size and location of the job. General liability insurance will be lower if they only do small residential jobs. Do not hire a roofer who is not licensed, bonded, and insured. If something goes wrong, there is no recourse. 3. Make sure that the roofer is a local residentYou should research the business history of a roofing contractor before investing in a new roof. Look for a contractor who is well-established and has a good history in your locality. You’ll find that if you go with a roofing company a few years older, their prices are likely to be lower. They don’t know the right way to price their jobs to ensure they have enough retained earnings to last them through winter. A new company is likely to close down at that time. This is not to say that there aren’t any good, young companies in your locality. Five years down the road, you’ll want to be sure that the company is still there to handle any issues or problems with your roof. 4. Choose a roofing contractor who stands behind their workRoof warranties protect your investment. There will be two warranties: one for the roofing material and another for the contractor’s work. The warranty protects you against improper roof installation and any other mistakes made during the installation. Each roofing company should provide some form of warranty on workmanship. You can choose from a variety of warranties, including one year, two years, three years, five years, 10 years, 25 years, and even lifetime. You should choose a roofing contractor that offers a warranty of at least ten years or more. It shows that they are proud of their work and will stand behind it if anything goes wrong. If a contractor does not offer a warranty on workmanship, you should never hire them. This article will explain what roof warranties include and why they are important. 5. Check if the roofing contractor you are considering has received certification from top shingle manufacturesTop shingle producers select six, eight, or ten of the best contractors from a given area for their certification process. The certification allows roofing contractors to offer enhanced warranties and the best warranties from shingle manufacturers. Ask a prospective roofing contractor if they are certified by the manufacturer. The certification shows you and other homeowners the manufacturer of the shingles trusts this contractor, and that they are a reputable roofer. The manufacturers will seek out contractors who are well-established in their community and have a reputation for high-quality work. It doesn’t necessarily mean that a contractor is a bad one if they aren’t certified. To find out who to trust and get the best warranties on roofing materials, check the certifications. 6. Recent customer reviews can be found on the website of the roofing contractor. In today’s digital age, there are many ways to locate a reliable local roofer, plumber, or carpenter. Customers choose services and companies based on reviews. You should only consider reviews from the past two to three months when evaluating potential roofing contractors. You’ll get a recent view of the good and bad experiences homeowners have had. Reviews can tell you a lot about a contractor’s quality of work. It’s not true that all reviews are accurate. Some people are extreme in their opinions. If a company does the right thing, stands behind its work, engages with its customers positively, and follows through on their promises, it will show up in its reviews. 7. When meeting roofing contractors, ask for referencesAsking for references is essential when meeting potential roofing contractors. You should ask every contractor who gives you an estimate for references of jobs that were completed within the last 3 to 6 months. How to Remove Mold from Your Roof
This week, we discussed how to distinguish between mold, moss, and algae on your roof. Here’s what to use when you have a clue as to what’s on your roof. Clean Roof of Mold and AlgaeOften mistaken for mold, algae and moss are more common on roofs. Even though it’s unsightly, algae and moss can be less harmful to roof shingles. You should still get it cleaned as soon as possible to avoid more growth that can cause shingles to lift and debris to become stuck beneath. You can use trisodium (TSP) or oxygenated bleach to remove moss or algae from your roof. Some contractors will also suggest mixing bleach and water 50/50. It’s important not to use any chemical treatments because the runoff water can damage metal, wood or landscaping around your home. Be sure to read the instructions and use the correct amount. Call a roofer to do the job for you. Mold is not the same as algae or moss. It may be difficult to get rid of mold. If you see mold growing in any part of your house, it could be a sign that there is a problem with ventilation or moisture. If you do not address the underlying problems, the mold can return even if it is removed from the surface. Mold can also be a problem if it is discovered too late. It could have rotted or damaged construction materials that need to be replaced. Mold growth can be a health hazard. We do not recommend that you clean it by yourself. Call a professional roofing contractor to help you identify the source of the mold, assess the damage, and sanitize affected areas. They can also tell you what steps to take to stop it from returning. What NOT to do when cleaning your roofThere are many ways to prevent or treat mold and algae on your roof. However, you should not use any of them. This includes:
What appears to be a roof being washed is actually granules being removed from your shingles. It’s easy to reduce the life of your roof by pressure washing! Scrubbing aggressively: Similar to pressure washing your roof, aggressively scrubbing your roof will cause it to deteriorate faster. The wrong tool or the wrong way to scrub can damage your shingles and require repairs sooner rather than later. Use harsh chemicals. There are many different types of cleaners, and some are harsher than others. Always make sure to use the correct solution for your roof’s problem. Remember that any chemical applied to your roof is likely to wash off and affect the rest of your house or landscape. You can damage other areas of your house or harm your plants and lawn by using harsh chemicals. Is It Mold? Call a Professional Roofing ContractorIt’s important to contact a professional roofing contractor in Myrtle Beach as soon as you notice mold in your home.
